Chania is the nicest town. Go to the mountains and the south for authentic rural Crete.

Far Cough 3:56 Tue May 28 Re: Crete 10thofMay, didn't the Germans first use paratroopers (Fallschirmjaeger) in the Norwegian campaign?
Sorry FC, you're quite right. It was one of those facts you hear and assume is correct.
I did look it up and it was the first use of paratroopers en masse but it's still not the first use!
"The Battle of Crete was the first occasion where Fallschirmjäger (German paratroops) were used en masse, the first mainly airborne invasion in military history, the first time the Allies made significant use of intelligence from decrypted German messages from the Enigma machine,[14][15] and the first time German troops encountered mass resistance from a civilian population.[16] Due to the number of casualties and the belief that airborne forces no longer had the advantage of surprise, Adolf Hitler became reluctant to authorise further large airborne operations, preferring instead to employ paratroopers as ground troops.[17][18] In contrast, the Allies were impressed by the potential of paratroopers and started to form airborne-assault and airfield-defence regiments."

Never been, although I recall a couple of mates going to Heraklion in the 80s, they shared a room (two singles) to keep the cost down as in early twenties and skint. Went out drinking and one pulled so the other left him to it went back to the apartment.
Later pissed up he brought her back and started to give her a rogering on his bed which woke his mate, halfway through he had to run for the bog to chunder, he returned to find his mate balls deep!

Cretans have a very wild independence streak, comes from the days of being part of the ottoman Empire.
In Chania there's a part Church/ Mosque worth loooking up.

Re: Crete

Knossos is well worth a visit.
Also, little known fact, Crete was the place where the first use of paratroopers took place, They were German unfortunately. there is a cemetery near to where you're staying and I think a museum ( i went in 1990).
The Germans didn't behave very well during the war on the island and they're not well liked (at least not in 1990!)
